If you read up on it, then you know that it is the Dutch East Indies Co.. Beautiful item & wish I had it since I live in dutch territory.
thank you blunderbuss,,,,,,,,i just wondered was it real??? how can i tell??
still need help though x
Sure looks real. There were varying emblems usually with a crown over the shield & sometimes several wavy lines across the bottom to represent water. If real, it is a fine prize. The West Indian counterpart was VGC, shorter lived & so more rare.
thank you soooo much,,,,,,,,i still wonder if there are reproductions although it seems really old!!!
are there people who are experts in this stuff on here, do you think???
help,,,,,,,,i dont actually mean to be rude (i,m scottish) but been researching for weeks
I need to correct myself. I was thinking about the rampant lion emblem when I added the part about the crown & waves. The VOC often stood alone or in shield. The VOC went bankrupt right after 1800 about 1803 as I remember. Haven't heard of reproductions but that doesn't really mean anything as anything of value is often counterfeited.
i found this one,,,,,,,,,http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/18829/lot/572/
it,s kinda like it,,or is that just wishful thinking?
Maybe you have the real thing! Many modern showings of the VOC usually don't give the cant to the "O" & "C" in relation to the V. Still doesn't prove anything of course. Since you interest is up, you might want to check out a youtube thing on recovery of items from the wreck of VOC ship Rooswijk.

This is one of those situations where it is hard to tell age from a picture. It looks like it has been refinished so the original look may have been altered. Also, can you tell if the shields and corner pieces are of a thicker silver or do they appear to be thin stamped out tin? The brass rivets appear to have good age to them. Perhaps a picture of the inside would help.
Ty trunkman,I,m not sure if they are thicker or the stamped out tin, I took more pics including the insise and what sounds like the lion rampant, crown, waves thing, just dont know how to put them here to show you x
I think i,ve worked it out, the pics thing x
