Made by James Powell and Sons in London, these Whitefriars square jug, decanter and jug were designed by Harry Powell in 1908 pattern number 2091. These designs were based on a roman jug that Harry Powell had seen. The roman jug was very similar to the claret jug but without the stopper.
Illustrated on page 113 of Whitefriars Glass, The Art of James Powell & Sons by Lesley Jackson, published 1996.
Whilst the decanter and claret jug are quite rare, the jug is the only one I have seen and it is not shown in either of the quite comprehensive books on Whitefriars glass. I am afraid I mugged someone on eBay who didn't know what it was, and luckily no other avid collector had seen it.
I have shown another picture of the handle to show how it is made based on a roman design.
