This item was recently unearthed during a clearance and after doing as much research as possible myself, I am now calling out to all the professionals on here whom may be able to help me solve this mystery.
What I have is a brass plaque of St George & The Dragon (St of England) which is attached, as you can see, to a piece of wood.
The wood it is attached too has a label on the rear stating that this is the brass plaque from The Canopy at Hereford Cathedral.
Now, I have found for sale rubbings of this very brass for sale on eBay, they sell for £40 and so I am guessing that what I have stumbled on is something pretty special. So people, what I need to know is who is the best place for me to speak to in regards to this item?
Who could tell me more about it? I read that a brass plate of the same year, also from Hereford Cathedral is now on display in the V&A museum in London. Should I contact them maybe?
Would be grateful of any help with this one, as if I am right and this is what it appears to be, my dreams of opening my own watch shop may be that little bit closer!!
I intend on taking it to Bonhams and Christies in the week, when I can get the time to have it properly looked at.
The sticker clearly has age to it, for it is browning and the font used is very old.
Can anybody help? Has anyone seen or heard about these brasses before?
Thank you in advance
I spoke to the Cathedral today, they are checking it for me and they sounded very excited about it. It is one of the missing pieces, that much we have established.
