This is a massive brass plaque weighing in at just under 5 pounds and is nearly 7 x 9 inches in size. The city of Breslau, now and originally known as Wroclaw has had an interesting history. Originally settled in the 10th century, it was destroyed by the Tartars in 1241. Rebuilt, it received it’s city charter in 1261. It became part of the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1335. In 1526 Bohemia became part of the Habsburg Empire (Austria) by marriage! Frederic the Great conquered it in 1741 and Prussia/Germany then held it until 1945. Breslau went back to Poland and it’s original name in 1945 where it remains to this day.
The Germanic influence couldn't be more pronounced.
Handsome!! I wonder where it came from? Very much enjoyed your verbal account!! : )
Thanks miKKo, I picked this up in Wausau Wisconsin from an estate sale dealer. I would guess that this once was proudly displayed on a wall in the home of a Polish or German immigrant and eventually was sold by the second or third generation of the family as often happens.
