The can is in too good of a condition to be really old but castor oil was used in aircraft rotary engines & a lot of other engines in the really old days. makes me wonder what current applications it is used for.

Yeah I agree, I thought that too. Some of the older ones have a black cap on top as well. It is full and sealed, would love to find out what it's for:)!

patience, patience kelkat. I've just spent an hr. researching this. I use Castrol in my truck & never connected the name. Weeding thru the medicinal uses, I find it is a high temp. oil but causes "sludging" so engines have to be torn down often. Doesn't seem to be used much for lubricants(intestinal not included) except model aircraft.
I've known about the ricin in the seeds & could possibly be applied to the dopers here. The plant grows locally!

tommy, I covered that site. Getting more interested in the ricin & lowering the doper problem on the island.LOL. Make that a lol.Make that a h'um!
I know a bit about oils. Parafin base sludges but a better lubricant. Asphalt base is not as good of a lubricant but most of what we get. Synthetics are much better, don't sludge or break down. Recycled oil is better as the weaker broken down molecules are filtered out. Don't know about now, but early synthetics could be very, very poisonous of ingested (1 of the reasons they got a slow start).

Oh man Blunderbuss, you went all out! You found more info then I could find in months, I am forever grateful! So I can use this on an island where they grow locally, and I shouldn't ingest it?:)

Just spent another hr + as I got side-tracked on rotary engines. Fascinating! You can ingest all you want, but be near a toilet. Actually the oil protects you from poisoning from the ricin. To get the lethal ricin, you have to get rid of the oil with acetone etc.. Then eat a few of the seeds if you want your birth certificate to expire. nasty sh-t that! Want me to mail some seeds? Got that irritable neighbour?

My sister had one but she lost it and everything else when her house burnt down. I have been looking for this for so long. Our grandfather and great uncle worked at Baker Castor oil in Bayonne for many years. Would there be anyway you would sell this. I would definitely buy it from you. We have nothing left from the company. It was all at my sisters house. Please get back to me. This can means so much to our family.

      Thank you :)
