Hi, I have this old trunk, it has blue or even a green canvas on top,, no devider inside, this was left in the basement to be throw away, but i kept it. The round latch where the key would go in was removed or broke into, but everything else is there, at the bottom there is some rust, belts are ok,, i want to know if it would be ok to remove the canvas and keep it only as a wood trunk or keep the canvas and clean the brass/metal, ?? I already tried to clean the canvas but it came back right the way it was before ( only took warm luke water and a soft dish soap) little brush and clean cloth. dimensions are 36" X 22" X 24" deep. One last thing , i would love to know a value between now ( without touching it) and the refurbish value. Any help on this trunk about refurbishing it would be welcome :)

Nice old trunk from around 1910 or so. There are a lot of these types out there so there is not a big value to them. Sometimes a trunk like this one would have more value if it was refinished. If I had this trunk I would remove the canvas and enjoy the pine wood underneath -- but that is a personal preference. There are a few sites out there that will do a step by step process to help you -- or you can look up trunks on this site -- there are a few like yours where a description in general terms of how to go about it are found. Hope this helps a little...and thanks for posting!

I love your trunk. I love when they get rescued. I, too , would remove all the canvas. The wood will be lovely, cleaned, sanded and a bit of tung oil. That's my vote.

Short of using a crow-bar, alas I have not discovered an easy way of opening these locks.

I am no expert on locks but I haved called a locksmith that works on old locks who would do this. There is one near my home. I bring him the trunk and then, about a week later I pick it up with a working greased lock and a "new" key. Usually $20 and a tutorial on the craft. I wonder what is inside...
