Greetings: This is a very rare tile made by Zanesville Majolica Company, Zanesville, Ohio. I purchased this on Ebay about 12 years ago. It measures 17" X 9 1/2". This pottery was established in the J & G Pyatt Pottery located next to the American Encautic Tiling Company. It existed for only 2 years (1882-1884), as the pottery burned to the ground in 1884. A short-lived attempt to revive the company failed. In 1883, the company won a silver medal at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition. The Smithsonian exhibits a small example of a tile made by this company. Interestingly, the imprinted mark on the reverse depicts the misspelled word "MAJOLICA" as "MAJLIOCA".
Going to Zanesville Saturday for auction. Love this it is beautiful.
