It has a paddle wheel in the middle and a crank on the side. I'm thinking maybe for a string line or something. This is approximately the size of a gallon jug, maybe a bit taller. Just to give a perception of size. It has round nails in it, not sqaure. This has me and a few others guessing. LOL

Would it be safe to assume that the U shape arms will spin when the handle is cranked? If there were containers mounted in the openings then you would get a mixing action if my uneducated guess is right. Interesting piece and I have two ideas but won't comment yet.

I agree with fhrjr2 as to a mixing device, thinking home-made paint stiring or possible butter chur device. neat idea either way.

That was one idea I had Kerry, except home made you wouldn't really need four openings. My other idea was assay or engineering. I saw an item similar but smaller out in Kansas years ago in a museum. You would put soil samples in clear glass containers add water and spin it to agitate everything. Then let it sit so everything settled. The sample would settle in layers.

The later sounds very possible, that's probably closer to the true function. I've never seen one ,but sounds a lot like a workable solution to the assay work.

What is printed on the side, has it been made from boards that came off of something else?
I can make out Gotelli, but not sure what the first part is.
I'm not sure how you would fasten containers to it, the string idea seems more plausible.

Yes the middle paddles spin while cranking. It looks to be made out of boards from a Cherry crate, so I didn't think the printing on the outside was important. But the printed letters are CTO (or possibly GTO) GOTELLI (or possibly COTELLI) It could possibly be used to mix something. I never thought of that.
