This is a gilt, Hollywood Regency period wall clock made in the starburst style. It is quite large at 20.5 inches in diameter - the clock face is 6 inches in diameter. The original movement was a cordless electric Elgin run by one C battery. All that was left was the sweep second hand, the other hands were gone. Inside the sealed plastic case you could see little mechanical parts whirring around, when it ran, which was only sporatically. Unfortunately, the sealed movement is not meant to be repaired, so we have installed a new quartz movement that self adjusts for daylight savings time so it now never has to be taken off the wall. One AA battery will now run the clock for over a year. The new hands complement the clock, and the original face, which says Welby, is in pretty good condition. Too bad we had we had to scrap the original Elgin movement, but there was no saving it. The most wonderful part of the clock is the case, which looks like wood but is made of some sort of gilt early plastic. It is quite light so not bakelite or resin. The gilding is in excellent condition, and it makes quite a statement on the wall.
