This postcard from the 1940s-1950s depicts the San Francisco skyline and the Bay Bridge. Though the card is addressed it was not mailed. The message reads, "Dear Alan: This bridge and approaches are about seven miles long. It has two levels, one for cars and another for trucks, buses and a[n] electric railroad. It takes me 40 minutes to ride out to San Francisco on the street car and elect. train. With love, Dad. (Hug Mama)"

The construction of the Bay Bridge began on July 9, 1933 and was opened for traffic on November 12, 1936. The total length of the Bay Bridge is 23,555 feet (4.46117 miles), and is 190 feet high.
      Thanks for showing your P.C.

Looks like it says "This bridge and approaches....

I agree, it looks like "approaches," but the sentence wouldn't make sense...

"Approaches" refers to the access roads leading up to the bridge itself; I love bridges and think you have a lovely postcard.

Thank you, I didn't know that! (Although I should, since I lived in San Francisco and crossed the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges countless times lol.) I will correct the person's postcard message.
