Thanks to RussTenale I am able to put not only a name but a face to this piece. The artist is Lynn Lais. He works out of Spruce Forest Artisan Village in Grantsville Maryland. Has been making pottery since 1981 and has collections in US and Europe.

    Thanks Russ!!!!!!!

There's a greg link who has a pottery in Buffalo. I'm sure you could send him the pics and ask him if this is one of his.

Excuse my thoughts. You sure have some obscure unsolved mysteries. This one in particular. LL (N) ends in K or S
    16. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
Obscure, I have been told that's what collecting is all about. I buy what I like and if I can figure out who it belongs to just an added bonus:)
      Thanks for looking!
    17. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
So sorry, obscure to the mark, not the beautiful vase.
    18. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
I GOT IT!!!!! I CAN TELL YOU WHO MADE THIS!!!
    19. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
No need to apologize, I did not take your comment wrong:)
    20. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
No way, we've been looking a while now. How did you do it and who is it?
    21. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
Well, I do apologize for not wording my comment correctly. And I can tell you exactly who made this vase.
    22. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      Ok Russ, spill the beans:)
    23. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
Do you want to follow along, and see what my mind's eye sees?
    24. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      Of course!
    25. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
Ok, very important, trust the eye.
    26. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      Okay, you have my attention.
    27. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
      This will be fun.
    28. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      Lets go!
    29. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
Look at the signature. This person uses sharp hard lines.
    30. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
Those are no question two L's
    31. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      You think?
    32. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
And that is not a K at the end, this person would have used three sharp strokes, one vertical and two angled.
    33. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
Lol! You really have me now!
    34. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
This person uses a curve only once and it is here at the end creating an S.
    35. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      And the middle?
    36. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
Is for sure no question IS at the end
    37. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      LL?IS
      A?
    38. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
The third character is the toughest. Put your pen or marker to paper. The first contact of your writing instrument will leave a blotch or dot. See it at the top of the first L?
    39. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
      Yes I see it.
    40. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
So this artist cleverly uses the horizontal stroke from the 2nd L to merge with the third mark to create an A. Common practice for artists.

So you have LLAIS. Did a search, no potter by that name. Well how about L. LAIS?

      Ready? Here we go ...

    49. RussTenale RussTenale, 12 years ago
This is an example of devoting proper time.

I'd have to start paying you salary if you took this much time with all of my unknown pieces.
