This is definitely an old, old one. believe it came from the Arnhem area. The base is made where the trunk angles back slightly. There is a rectangular box on one side & no other partitions. Was successful at making a key for it. The hinge straps are blacksmith made. My guess is no later than 1850.
OK, T-Mon, enter stage left.
I am kinda in love with your Levi's curtains -- but I digress. Beautiful old chest as you say. Hand made cast iron latches and hinges certainly from at least the era you describe. Those big square dovetails on the side also speak of handmade early craftsmanship. I do not know much about age of anything much earlier than 1850's -- but certainly this appears at least that old -- maybe older. Exit stage right...

Beautiful chest, blunderbuss!!
That is so nice, I love old trunks.
Love it!...the rectangular box on the side probably were the candles were kept!...:-)
That's a good guess(?) Inky and you are probably right. I forgot to mention that the lock & plate are obviously blacksmith made as hammer marks are obvious.
I just love this site, I would never be able to see, all of the wonderful trunks without C.W. and the great people who post.
Love you trunk..
