This is a lovely large, hand-painted enamel pin. It has delicate butterflies with gold overlay. Some of the gold has worn off, although most of it is OK. It is set in silver, and the bezel is wonderfully hand scalloped. The pin has a solid back and is missing the loop that holds the pin. I have seen a similar design on Satsuma jewelry from the Meiji period - the butterflies are almost identical. However, this piece is not signed, so I cannot be sure. Maybe it is just a good reproduction? The enamel is crazed, but overall it it in nice condition. Is it an Satsuma?
Love love ! stunning

I think this could be indeed a Satsuma brooch.
Thank you all for the loves and appreciation. Thank you for your comment Agram.m I wonder if you think I should take this to a silversmith to have the loop restored or will this devalue the piece as an antique? I would very much like to be able to wear it.
Beautiful!
No way, definitely Meiji-era Satsuma. KILLER piece, butterflies are VERY desirable. I would have paid 50 bucks for it, maybe more
Thank you Stillwater for your comment and confidence in the Satsuma - I was pretty sure it was too as the butterflies are identical. I was thinking that I might be willing to part with this piece to the right appreciative party. I see from your posts that you have a strong interest in Asian art. Please feel free to communicate with me via my website email address if you have an interest in expanding your collection of Satsuma with this beautiful silver brooch! :-)
