Hi There!
This is a piece that has been in my wife's family for years, but no one seems to know any specifics -- its origin, time period, or even what something like this is called!
Obviously it is in need of some repair, and we'd love to be able to accurately describe the piece. Would appreciate any insight that anyone could send our way.
Thanks!
Looks like variety of bustle bench, made to accommodate women's full-skirted dresses with a bustle in back - probably about the 1880s - 1890s, if it's authentic. The spindle design is something I haven't seen (maybe Stickney influence), and the wood is light - what kind is it? Appears from the photo to be a light maple, perhaps - hard to tell.
Sorry - a typo. I meant Stickley, not Stickney . . .
The item could also be a later period vanity chair to go with a woman's vanity table.
Thanks for your comment, so happy to see that someone has some idea of that this is! The wood is actually painted yellow, through a couple of chips I can see the wood underneath is dark, but that's all I can say about the wood. We plan to strip it of paint when the weather warms up, maybe that will provide some new insight.
Thanks!
