At the risk of mortifying our adult children (they knew this was coming, sooner or later...), here are our sons on the cover of Sunset magazine, where I used to be an editor. Date is May of 1993 (roughly two decades ago), which makes the older one almost 6 and his younger brother just over 2.
For the record, this issue of Sunset sold extremely well in the grocery stores where my parents shopped, but that was about it. How can I put this? How about "It was the 11th-best-selling issue of the year!" Although I'm guessing the pathetic sales had more to do with the concept of putting an Adirondack chair (which sits on our front porch to this day), some sad-looking plants, and a basket of stale bread in the same photo. The kids were added at the last minute. They're the best part, right?
For the record, Norm Plate was listed on the masthead page as the photographer, but Peter Christiansen really took the shot.
Hi Kevin:
Nope, they did not get paid, but we got to keep the chair....
