When I found this ashtray while cleaning out my mother's basement, I thought Kevin might enjoy seeing it. When I saw he might be leaving us, I decided I'd better stop procrastinating.
The ashtray is about 4 1/2" across, and the blue image seems to have been silkscreened on the underside of the glass (I can feel the raised ink as I run my finger over the underside). I'm not sure if silkscreen vice decal would help establish the age. I did not notice the yellowish crud in the corner in picture two untill I posted the picture, but it came off with a damp washcloth.
This ashtray was sitting on some storage shelving near the basement ceiling and had such a heavy coat of dust on it that I didn't see any decoration at all untill I wiped it off. I don't know how old this thing is, but we haven't had a sailor in the family since WWII, and the last smoker in this house died in about 1970.
Also notice the retro formica pattern on the table. My mother's house is nicely furnished in "mid-century modern." Of course she had the same furnishings twenty years ago, but back then they were just "old."
