Anyone know if this chair is an actual Shaker rocker? it is put together with wood pegs and appears to be really old. I added some additional pics of the mortise tenon joints and also how the green paint has not all been removed. Any chair info is appreciated.
Hallmark, welcome to CW! I will be honest I have some doubts at first glance. Looks like a reproduction which was manufactured instead of hand turned. It is possible this was restored or fixed up.
A few things to look for. Hand carved joints, mortise and tennon. Very old shaker chairs were not stained, they were painted to cover up the wood which was used. They would normally use many different types of wood, whatever they could get their hands on. This looks a little to consistent, but I could be wrong. usually I would have to see it in person to be sure. Also, the rush seat is in perfect condition. After many years this would have been broken, dirty with oils and, loose.
A lot of modern repros have wooden pegs as part of their "charm". Lets see what others think! Thanks for sharing your chair!
Bhock, thanks for the response. I appreciate the candor and accept all helpful comments on nailing down the age/make of the chair. let me know if more snaps would help.
