What were these used for , I've seen these every now and then and wonder what their purpose was. This one has a character mark on the bottom.

Hi it may be an incense holder for a home alter.

It's for arranging flowers, a floral frog. Stems in the holes, water in the dish.

Only the "frog" is higher than the edge of the dish, so no water for flowers with that idea. http://www.incenseontheway.com/product.asp?specific=1345 or it is a Japanese Incense Holder.

      I hope that helps,
