I picked up this crock the other day - cheap. The paint was all peeling and ugly, so i cleaned it off quickly - which removed all but the black paint. I kind of like how it looks now w/ some of the paint showing. I was looking closely at it today and noticed that you can see a 'J. A. Bauer Pottery' and a '3' and 'Los Angeles, California' on it. So this is an early Bauer Pottery crock? it's really nice. i'd love to know more about the company at that time as well as the value of this crock. what kind of crock is it? Date? i think it's before 1928, when Andy Bauer died. The piece is hand-thrown on a wheel, from the looks of it.

thank you very much Bellin68. i just found out that it's an early Bauer Oil Jar and pretty valuable. i don't think that the paint is original - but added many years ago - during the deco movement. what do you think?
oops! i think the paint was original and this is a very, very valuable piece. i just read about two others which were painted sort of like this - but none quite like it. it's from around 1915-1920 and the paint i already removed [the colors of peeling paint seen in the last photo] would have added quite a bit of value to it. oh well... i seem to always do this.
i had already cleaned the peeling paint off. i still think it looks a lot better now, but i do regret cleaning it too. thanks bellin68!
thanks mustangtony. i like it more this way too, but from a collector of bauer, i think it would have been better untouched. oh well... someone called me from los angeles yesterday to see if was interested in selling it, but he was offering too little for what he sells at. i'll hold on to it for awhile.
