    This is a French late 18th century tapered decanter with etching and some gilding remaining.
    This must have looked spectacular in it's day. It makes you think when you see the remnants of gilding like this, how many of the old etched decanters I have were actually gilded when new.

      beautiful - do you know how the gilding process worked? I'm curious what the application method was like (I've only experimented with gilding simple items with flat surfaces)
