Just as I expected this is a very old chair. Is the seat made out of one solid piece of wood?

Looks like mortise and tennon joints I would date this early 1800's. Tomorrow I am going to hit the ref. books and see what I can find. It seems to have a spanish colonial look, I think it is a hallway chair. These type of chairs were thin and tall, so not to take up too much room in the hallway.

It looks like your chair is made either mostly or entirely out of pine??

Take a look at this link. The design is similar, this is a hallway chair.

I cannot get over how thick the turnings are. This is a well made chair, and I am sure a great find on your part. Very impressive, I love this chair! Bed time for me now, see you soon!

Looks like pine, definitely not mahogany.

Do u think the chair is rare or very valuable?
    11. BHock45 BHock45, 12 years ago
I agree walksoftly...again. Dalet007, I have found that it is very hard to put a price tag on such chairs. Mostly chairs like this were not labeled or signed by their makers. Sometimesthey have a patent that can help you ID it.

The value of old chair like this are what the buyer will pay for it. Some people need a chair for a specific space in their house and would pay hundreds, and some wouldn't take it for free.

If it was my chair, which I wish it were...:) I would Look through all of the sold listings on that auction site and try to find one similar. That is the value of the chair. Rarity, I cannot comment on rarity but I told you I would looks through some books and I will.

I have major back pain, so I just have to find time to get up and do it. Take care!!

You said you got it in ohio, so PA Dutch has to be a possibility. They do a lot with pine. I am from NJ, I go there often.

Also think about it...The fact that the seat is made of one piece of wood is a huge deal. If it were more modern, theres a 95% chance that it would have been several pieces with machine cut grooves glued and joined. Really a great chair.

HI Bhock..Thanks for all your imput.I have been gone all day and just now got home.Im going to research my chair more tomorrow. Thanks again, Wm

hey dalet007. No problem! I did take a look through Wallace Nuttings Furniture Treasury today. What I notice about your chair are how similar the finials are too some really old timers. The design of the bottom stretchers on yours are totally unique. I will check out the furniture doctors book tomorrow. I think that books give example of styles of seats, stretchers, finials etc.

Can I ask you to looks at the bottom of the legs when you get a chance. Maybe even provide a picture on this posting, you can remove one of the old ones. Anyway, if this is a very old chair the bottom of the legs or feet will be totally worn. Just wondering.

      Take care!

Well it looks as though I'm a little late to the convo, but I HAD to comment! I was very excited to see this post, as I also have the exact same chair and had always wondered about its origin! I picked mine up at a local thrift store for about 11 bucks! I had no idea what I was buying, I just bought it because it was unique! Did you end up keeping yours??

I have a chair somewhat like that but more spindles....I was told by the older women who have seen it that these were used as spinning chairs. They only needed to lightly perch on the edge so that they could pedal with spinning wheel with the other leg??? Not sure if that's the truth, but thought I'd drop it in there if anyone else has ever heard of such a thing...
