Hi,
This is a photo by Alexander Gardner titled "incidents of the war"; his name appears in the far left corner. The only other caption is the word "Washington" in the far right corner.
The photo was found with a letter that states that this photo represents the War Dept. in Washington upon the signing of the surrender of Richmond, etc.
I have not been able to find another photo like this and I'm trying to verify if the letter is accurate and possibly identify some of the individuals in the photo.
Thanks
The photograph (albumen print) appears to be from Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War.
It was published in two volumes of 50 images each (100 total images). It was originally published in 1865 and again in 1866.
The "Incidents of War" was a subtitle on every page. Below that was the actual title of the image-- yours has been cut off.
If you search online for "Gardner's photographic Sketch book", you will find sites that have pictures of many of the images and listings of the images from both volumes.

Thanks for the info. So far, I have yet to see another example of this particular photo, but I will keep looking...
