This is made out of cast iron, it`s 3"x4" and weighs .40lbs. It was found with a metal detector 6" down in a very old town in Rhode Island. Please help me determine what this thing is. Thanks.

just a guess, but maybe part of a cast iron toy cannon
Wow, what a puzzler
Part of an old boot scraper??
It`s defiantly a cannon shape, not sure if it was toy, decorative, or part of something else. I have had 3 different museum curators tell me they have no idea what it is. I`m going to look into the boot scraper idea. Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming.
Definitely.
Thought it looked like a part of the base for a wall mount kerosene lamp holder. But cannot see any holes for mounting - unless it's a piece of the holder base itself. Hmmm. I know I've seen something like this before...I'll try to shake it loose from memory. :)
Still can't figure it out but it appears that I am the CW "expert" on antique cannons. The trunnions are way too far rearward for proper balance of the tube & appears to be the reason the "wings" are there for weight in the back. It appears that the trunnions are mounted in line with the center-line of the bore, which generally means 1800 or after. Is it bored? I can't add anything else but wish I could.
It looks like a decorative cannon.
Most likely a piece of ornamental iron work-- maybe meant as a decorative touch on fencing or other other iron item.
scott
Scott, very well could be right. No mounting holes but maybe they weren't pre-drilled. As good a guess as any, but still feel it's not quite right.
