This is an original Dante stone lithograph from my private collection of Magic posters. This poster advertised Dante's Mystery Revue show at the Lewisham Hippodrome Theatre located in South London on Monday June 21, 1937. The theatre no longer exists.
This is a very rare poster and is in excellent condition considering the age and the fact that it was actually displayed to advertise the show, a true piece of advertising history. This poster is a half-sheet measuring approximately 20" x 30".
Dante (1883-1955) was born Harry August Jansen in Denmark. He emigrated to the U.S. as a small boy. He started out in magic as an illusion builder.
Dante toured the world with his show "Sim-Sala-Bim", including on Broadway. Sim Sala Bim was Dante's trademark which he used as his magic words. He was often billed as "King of Magicians".

Truly a classic Dante image from his European tour. Incidentally the Lewisham Hippodrome in Catford was quite an impressive theatre, seating well in excess of 3,000. The neighborhood was heavily damaged during a Nazi air raid in 1940 - but the theatre survived - only to be demolished in 1960.
Yes, very much a classic image and you gotta love the incredibly dramatic lighting effect that was painted onto Dante's face! For sure one of my favorite Dante posters! Thanks for the information and kind words Circusposters, much appreciated.
