My mothers grandmother bought a resturant in Lockport NY in 1945 and acquired all the equipment that was inside-this cast iron piece being one of them. The resturant dated back to 1925, and my mom, who is now in her 70's, remembers being told that the piece is from the 1850s. To her knowledge, this was used as a french fryer. Do you know if that is the true use of this piece? What is its approximate age and value? We just seasoned it with cooking oil to inhibit rust.
    Thank you for your help.

I would think that French Frying is a modern term, not used back in the time frame of this piece. I could not find anything like this in my Griswald/Wagner books, I have never seen that handle configuration before so I had to check.
My guess is that it was a blanching pot for preparing veggies before canning.
