This is one of my most treasured possessions. When I was a little girl visiting my Grandparents in our house in Tokyo, Japan. I would stare at this doll in the glass case and dream it was me. I found out after my Grandmother passed away about 10 years ago that she made this Geisha Doll as a coming of age into Womanhood. Or marriageable ...
All well breed or High Class young ladies were supposed to be able to make one from the ground up. The face was hand painted and the hair was handmade also. Everything down the Kimono, Obi, sash and the hair ornaments. The shoes and the undergarments were done by hand. My Grandmother made 2 dolls both very different. I dreamed of one day having this one. So when my Grandmother passed away..my mother went to visit our house in Tokyo...and for some reason she asked me if I would like to have one of the 2 dolls for her to bring over on her carry on! I said "yes please"...not knowing which doll it was. I was stunned to find out that after 34 years later I finally was gifted with the doll of my dreams! I hope you enjoy the pictures...I love her everyday. She is beside my bed and she watches over me every night :)
valentino97, most of the dolls you see are mass produced. During the war for Export. Unless you know the history...and after seeing this doll again I now can tell the difference! This is was made with fine Silk Kimono and the face was hand painted. The ones you see being sold are not the real deal. I only know this because my friends Father's were GI soldiers in WW2 and they brought back many dolls that came out of the barracks stores..for there girlfriends or wives. I am happy to share this...she is my treasure!
