When I see something interesting and cheap, I snatch it up and hide it at the bottom of the basket. I then get out as fast as I can. This was the scenario this morning at the thrift. This was the very last item on the shelves and I didn't hesitate to grab it. My first thought was that it would look great in my daughter's room. I didn't examine it until I got home later in the evening. Looks like paper mache, original art, which is either signed or stamped. First it looked stamped, upon further examination I am not so sure. 1960's or 1970's Latin American/Hispanic???

    The name looks like:

    "GINA TUREX" or "GUA TUREX"

Both names bring up results but it seems like Gina Turex may be the final answer. Can anyone help with this one? Thanks!!!

this is great! i love to find things which are obviously made by someone who really understands and pushes the limits of the material and this is one of them.

I have this same mask. I had another but am sorry to say the dog got to it. My husband and I purchased the two masks for our kids. at a shop in Durango, Co. They were purchased in the early 1990s. The same name is stamped in my lion head.

      Hi,
I also have a paper mache mask
a rabbit with the same signature. The name seems French to me and are they not famous for paper mache? If you find out any info please let me know.

I would guess made in Mexico, and that the last name is some var. of Mex. I'll take a closer look and do a search and see what I can see.

Take a look around paper mache masks, either Mexico or Guatemala, see what you can see. :)

NOPE! I'm totally wrong! It's made in Thailand! This person says Gina Turex, too. She must be the designer, because they are very specifically designed. Check out here:

Apparently Gina Truex is a well known artist:

It's by Gina TRUEX, not Turex. Here's one with a brief description of the artist. These were sold via Neiman Marcus & Boulder CO at Silver Deer. She calls them Paper Mache, and each is supposed to be signed & numbered. (But they are made in Thailand?)
