It's about 10" high, embossed THE PEERLESS on the side, there's a small hole in the bottom and a tiny release valve on too with this cone with a removeable screw cork. Is it possibly a stove part? It looks to be from the 1900's.

      Add some more pictures please.
As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

It's not an expansion tank, too thin. Possibly to do with a stove or heating.

It could be a fuel tank for a kerosene stove or heater. Most of the tanks were made from glass, but some were metal.
I think the outlet valve is missing from the bottom.

Probably, and the bleed valve atop might be for escaping vapor. But I've yet to see one like it online.

Here is a link to the only history that I could find on Peerless stoves.
      http://www.premierrange.com/history.php
You could try contacting them or a library in that area.

I've looked up the stoves, it might actually be an oil tank or a reservoir for an old engine as the top inlet has a funnel shape.

Oil tank for a Peerless motorcycle?
