I bought this Trevaise vase some years ago. It is a good detective story :
I saw an ad in the Bee Antiques Newspaper for an all Sandwich glass auction to take place at the beautiful 19th cent. home of the people that had collected Sandwich glass for 50 years.
In the ad were photos of some of the lots to be sold. One piece caught my eye as under the photo it said " unsigned Quezal vase". I thought hmmm why would people who only collect Sandwich glass have a piece of "unsigned Quezal". I phoned the auctioneer and asked, " does it have a button pontil ". He replied yes.
I then checked my copy of the Sandwich Glass Museum Journal Vol.11 (2001). It has an extensive article about Trevaise including the original flyer put out in 1907 announcing Trevaise. In the flyer are photos of Trevaise models......and there was the "unsigned Quezal".
I went to the auction and of course the vase came up almost at the end. The good thing was it was held out doors in late Fall and by late in the afternoon it was cold. Most people left but I hung in there. When the piece FINALLY came up the auctioneer started it at $50. One old lady took the bid ( there is always one ) and then he went to $75. I put up my hand and the old lady gave me a look that would kill.......however she did not advance her bid. So the wonderful Trevaise was mine for $75. plus comm.
That is a great find beautiful vase....
Great story and good eye on this one! It's also a great piece of glass.
