This came up for auction yesterday. Nobody bid against me so i got her for 5.00. When I saw her I thought it was a quality piece. Researching her I found several that match exactly down to her little toes. All of the others I have found are clear no color. This one actually changes color when she is moved from room to room. She is sometimes blue sometimes purple and sometimes a light yellowish color. Is a Czech piece. Even though I can find the exact piece I do not have the original lable and cannot find one that isn't clear. Any comments welcome. Thanks and Happy Easter!

i think they refer to this glass that changes colors pending on natural light or incandescent as optic or alexandrite

different companies called it different things. it's neodymium glass, it could be Czech. It could be other countries... something looks off to me on the cutting on the star on her head. I dont know who made it. Neodymium glass is always collectible though. Moser had the original patent on it. In the early years they liscenced it out to a few other companies. I know there was a german company that did moser like glass in the mid century. Now you can find it from CZ Germany, china, france America and a few other places.

Does it say something on her foot? it looks like something might be pressed onto HER actual foot not the base of the piece? I don't think the base (proper) or the way teh star is cut on her head indicate any of the best firms (Moser, Sevres or Riedel) for production of this piece. the cutting is unfinished looking and the base looks bloppy and bubbly And if this piece were older it would necessarily be from one of these firms. Tiffin and Fostoria also had licence but again I'd expect it to be finished better. Odds are this is a newer example.. but as I said.. this kind of glass always has a fan base.

can you show a pic of the actual bottom of the piece? it would probably also give good clues.

also some links for the exact duplicates you've found might be helpful

I think this is either Desna or Schlevogt.. I found some duplicates marked desna. they are from old schlevogt molds. Either way excellent score for five bucks. I am not that strong on desna/schlevogt but the way the crown is finished does make me think Desna is more likely.

Focke Meltzer was a retailer. I found one with the amsterdam tags but made in czech.

      http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Catholic-CZECH-Glass-Madonna-Satin-Glass-Clear-Base-Focke-Meltzer-/360610843148

here is one with stickers. to me the detailing on her looks crisper than the one you have. I think she is one of the older stock from Schlevogt

      here is the desna version
      http://www.ebay.com/itm/MADONNA-SIGNED-Art-Deco-DESNA-Handcrafted-Glass-Crystal-Religious-Sculpture-/120885189142

but when all is said and done ymmv.. This type of glass isn't my normal thang. maybe a collector of this kind of glass will come along and offer more insight than me :) I could be wrong. She might be one of the originals.
My concern is that the cutting on her crown is very rough. it should be smooth and polished for schlevogt. if original it might have been damaged and recut but not polished.
    17. Greatsnowyowl Greatsnowyowl, 12 years ago
and the base looks like it has bubbles.. it should not have bubbles if schlevogt. (but it could be reflections in the photograph)
    18. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
Thanks GSO, I found the same one on eBay and a few others. Glass isn't my thing but sometimes I won't pass up something like.
    19. nldionne nldionne, 12 years ago
Thanks for a info GSO. I am not a great photographer, just snap with iPhone. There aren't any bubbles or flaws on her base reflections and goo from auction sticker. I appreciate all of your time.

Excuse my thoughts, I was concluding that Focke Meltzer was a retailer also. And the close of up the toes you have do not look as detailed as ones I could find. It's all in the details:) I agree, sharper images would help tremendously, for comparison.

I need to try some more photos. These were taken in my kitchen at night. It is very detailed when you see it in person. If I could find any cables to download from a real camera it would be sweet:)

She is beautiful. I'm sure you will solve it, you have excellent research skills. My friend that I mentioned on another comment is like you. When he has his mind set on finding the answer he never gives up. We used to have marathon searches going on. Miss him.

It is Desna, apparently Schlevogt never made a Neodymium but Desna did.

Nice! My first guess was going to be, and it was only a guess. "Sun Purple" glass.

Hi! Actually the link above for collectorsaddition.com no longer works - but there is a working page that has all of the alexandrite glass they had made exclusively (so you won't find anywhere else):

go to http://www.collectorsaddition.com and type in Alexandrite
      https://www.collectorsaddition.com/

mobile friendly site http://www.thecollectorsaddition.com and type in Alexandrite
      https://www.thecollectorsaddition.com/

Other Alexandrite Glass is on this site from time to time as well.

      Hope that helps

By the way I LOVE the angel you got above - that's how I found this post! Great Score!
