this is one of my favourite Netske pieces...I loved the way the artist made the horse so real...it measurs 2 inches by 1.25 wide and does have a crack going...but loved it anyway....I was never into Netske but this one I had to buy :))
Perhaps the crack was intentional?
The horse within a gourd?
I wonder if there is a literary reference?
It seems that there is a Japanese expression that translates as 'horse from a gourd' it is a humourous expression equivalent to 'out of the blue':

Gourd or Hyotan is a symbol of Good Luck.
"Hyotan kara koma ga deru".
"Koma" means a horse, but of course a horse can't spring out of a gourd.
The meaning is that things can happen in unexpected places.
Mary does or is that a lid or cork like on top, does it remove? It is really special! Horse is cute! I use to grow gourds! I traded some to a Pomo Indian lady and she made a painting of my son and dog! I really like gourds! Pumpkins too! My son and I use to enter Giant Pumpkin contest every year!! LOVE that horse and gourd!!!
always love your post -- we have so many things in common -- own many of these items -- some real -- some really good fakes -- but i have learned over the years how to recognize the difference
