Dan Dare is a British science fiction comic hero (equivalent to US Buck Rogers), created by illustrator Frank Hampson who also wrote the first stories, that is, the Venus and Red Moon stories, and a complete storyline for Operation Saturn. Dare appeared in the Eagle comic story Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future in 1950, dramatised seven times a week on Radio Luxembourg.

Theses two pocket watches were made by UK Ingersoll in the early/mid 50's. The 'Dan Dare' watch has an Eagle engraved on the case back. I cannot find any description on the 'From Outer Space' watch from reference books but I believe this was a companion piece to the 'Dan Dare' watch. Both watches have double-animation.

      geo26e,
My 2006, No.26, Complete Price Guide to Watches, by Gilbert, Engle & Shugart, on page 423 shows both of your watches side by side, both made in England, but does not say anything about being companion watches. I would tend to think so, but I'm sure Kerry will be along to give us the correct answer.

Now you're just showing off George, very "Great" pieces. Love the Dan Dare and the other has another piece very similar and also titled "Outer Space" that has just a space ship, no man at the bottom. Both of these are mid 1950's to very early 1960's. Fantastic finds, both are considered "Higher" end collectables and very desirable pieces, Congrats George.

Dave, thanks very much for the 'Love'. I also noticed that the watches are mentioned in the Engle Gilbert Price Guide. Apart from this, I have not seen any write up on the 'From Outer Space' watch. I am just guessing that they are companion pieces as the nodding head has a helmet that looks a little like Dan Dare's! LOL

Kerry, thanks very much for hitting the 'Love' button and your ultra kind comments LOL The Dan Dare has a movement No 526M and the From Outer Space 556M hence I thought the watches were early/mid 50's. Also, I didn't know there is another piece called 'Outer Space'. If you have a picture of this piece, please could you send it to me so that I can keep an eye for it in the future.

      geo26e,
      The Outer Space watch, as you call it, is actually the Festival of Britain Dan Dare watch. Quite rare, in fact scarcer than the Eagle Dan Dare pocket watch. See here;
      http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/archive/exhibits/festival/exploring.htm
I have 2 of these watches and they both have the FoB logo engraved on the rear, similar to the Eagle engraving.
I am new to this forum, but I will post pictures if anyone is interested and I can find out how :)
      Derek
    22. geo26e geo26e, 12 years ago
Hello Derek, thank you very much for the information on the Outer Space watch. The back cover on mine is plain with no engraving. Would love to see the FoB logo on yours. The gentleman who sold the watch to me bought it new in the 50s from a Jewellery shop in Tottenham Court Road. Perhaps the ones with logo were sold only at the FoB! Also, welcome to CW. George
    23. kimota kimota, 12 years ago
Hi George, I have placed some pictures of the FoB pocket watch and one of the 2 versions of Dan Dare watch, which shows that you have the earlier one.
After the FoB event finished in 1952, a lot of the watches had the backs replaced with plain ones by jewellers who probably thought that they wouldn't sell with the 1951 FoB logo. There was a normal FoB pocket watch called the Ingersoll Triumph which also has the FoB engraving. I will post a picture of this one.

Hi, I have the watch on the right too. I am fascinated to find this as I have googled it a few years back and never seen a picture of it or any information.
Mine is also plain on the back and it was my fathers.
Do you know the value of this - not that I want to sell it( sentimental reasons).
      Have just joined.
      Many thanks
    27. geo26e geo26e, 11 years ago
Sherry65, thank you for visiting and hitting the Love button. Very much appreciated. Another collector has posted the same piece with a matching fob and you can get more information here : http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/91154-festival-of-britain-dan-dare-pocket-watc?in=user. Value wise, for a working example in good original condition, it will be in the region of, say, US$200 upwards. The Festival of Britain version with matching fob will worth a lot more.
