This is a bottle that my husband and I found in an abandoned old house. I will post a picture of the house with the photos of the bottle. We don't know anything about it except through the rust, we can see these words and letters on it. "One Gallon" is between the neck and the actual bottle, "Ball 8-5" is written on the base along the bottom of the bottle below the "One Gallon," and "843-128" is on the bottom of the bottle, and "B7" is on the other side of the bottle on the bottom. We thought it was very interesting and don't want to wash the rust marks out because of the rustic look it gives it, actually that is what attracted us to it in the first place. If somebody can please tell us anything about this bottle, such as what it was used for, or it's age, or anything else about it, that would be great! The house we found it at was found near Fowler, Colorado; and the bottle was on a handmade shelf. Everything in there looked as if it was old and in the house originally, before it was abandoned, however, it could have been placed there after that and just obtained the rust marks. The ring on the neck of the bottle is metal, and appears to be the bottom half of a screw on lid or cap, but we couldn't find it anywhere. And like I said, anything that ANYBODY can tell us to either get us started on researching the bottle, or anything that will give us any idea how old it is, or what it was used for, would be fantastic. Thanks so much!!!

I'm sorry to say that your bottle is not very old- I would say 1970s based on base markings. These types of jugs often held wine, and probably is a remnant of a group of friends hanging out in the old cabin and enjoying a nice drink. The rust marks could also be remnants of the original contents that have evaporated up against the edges of the glass.

If you want to find some old bottles closer to the vintage of that home, look under the floorboards or go out back about 30 feet and dig a hole where the old outhouse was. That's where treasure awaits!
