This heavy 10 5/8" tall American Brilliant Cut Glass Pitcher carries the "ELITE in a Maple Leaf" watermark of the Gowens, Kent & Company Ltd. under-base. It actually weighs close to 6 lbs. so must have been a chore for the lady of the house to serve a beverage from in the early 1900's.
This company purchased their blanks from top of the line Glass Companies in the United States and cut them in intricate and detailed patterns. They were in operation from 1900 to about 1918 in Toronto, Canada and this pitcher was probably an early example of their fine work. The main pattern is three deep-cut cross-hatched daisies on the front & sides with foliage and graduated ribbing under the neck. The raised lip is also cut in a spray of leaves and there is a 32-point star pattern under-base. It is in a Museum quality condition and is one of many ABCG items that we have collected over the years.
If anyone recognizes the blank or the company that may have supplied the blank used by Gowens, Kent & Co. to cut this fabulous pitcher, we would love to know this information
