OK, another inherited item! Mantel clock with no markings on the case or face or anywhere on the front. Inside, on the back of the works, is stamped "EMPIRE Made in England 24492"

You can read most of this on the photo of the works if you zoom.

So, how do I find out about this clock? I looked for Empire Clock Company in England, but not very helpful online info.

Please help me identify the vintage of this clock, and more about the Empire Clock Company of England.

    Thank you!!

      "Empire" was/is a quality clock.

      Here is some information:

      "Astral and Empire

Astral and Empire were originally the trademarks of a company called Williamson who established a reputation for an excellent movement, itself called Astral. Through sundry amalgamations and purchases the tradename passed to a company called English Clock and Watch manufacturers Ltd which was purchased by Smiths in 1932. Smiths thus acquired the Astral and Empire tradenames.

Smiths used the "Empire" tradename extensively for their watch products.

"Smiths Astral" was used for many years in connection with high quality marine clocks such as the 6123 and 8123. They also made a range called "Smiths Empire" with fewer features.

In later years Smiths used "Astral" as a tradename for their range of quartz controlled clocks.

Shortly before the company ceased production they were using the Astral and Timecal tradenames almost indiscriminately, using the names for ranges of clocks of several types."

Thank you Bruce! This is definitely a good lead. From going through the link you sent, I am inclined to think this is either a pre-1932 Williamson model clock, or a post-1932 Smiths clock. I'll keep digging.... thanks again.

You're very welcome Steve. It's a nice looking Tambour. I like the damascene pattern on the movement plate. Please let us know what you find out.

Steve, I have a mantel clock of a different style, but an identical movement. I have been searching for a suspension spring (to which the pendulum attaches) without any luck. The clock worked beautifully for many years until the hook at the end of the spring became detached. I see the suspension spring is missing from your clock as well. If you ever find one, please let me know where you got it.

I have a clock with the same mechanism but no pendulum. Any pics of what I should be looking for? Any tips on where to look for one?
