Another interesting little treasure from my tin. This is clearly a Victorian mourning pin. It is a very unusual setting - almost like muffin cups with the bottom of the jet? held in the muffin tin. There are no marks except "made in Germany) on the pin. The metal is very soft. You can see that the stone on the right was twisted - after I took this pics I tweaked it to see if it would move and it moved so easily. The whole setting appears to be very pliable so I am not sure what it is made of - it looks like brass but brass is not generally this soft. The carving (or pressing) on the stones is symmetrical so that the carving makes a circle with the inner 4 pieces. But if you look closely there are little differences in each one which makes me think it is carved, and this, along with the fact that it is made in Germany, makes me think it is jet. What do you think?
Wonderful piece...love the artsy nature to the pin...never seen one like this...great find!!!
