Square cut glass dome with star pattern, this piece belongs to my sister. At a recent visit she asked me to look into it. I looked in my depression glass reference book. I original thought it was Early American Prescut, but something is not quite right. I thought it may be the 1/4lb cover butter , but It may be a dome for a cheese plate. unfortunately I do not have the dimension, but I will get them.
    Thanks
    Pauline

Pauline, this is pressed glass meant to imitate cut glass. The pattern is Illinois made by US Glass Company, introduced in the late 19th century. It's part of what is called the "States Series," as the company produced a series of patterns named after states in the union at the time. It's a butter dish lid. Butter dishes were quite large back then!
