I've been trying to find out some information on a map I have. On it it says:
    Copyright Southern Pacific Company
    1936
    Rand McNally & Co map
    Engravers Chicago & N.Y
    Southern Pacific Lines & Connections

What makes it different from the ones I can find is that it measures 3 feet, 4 inches by 4 feet. Years ago I had it framed to keep it clean & in good condition. Can you tell me if these were made for the public or S.P. use ? It looks like something that would have hung in an S.P, office.
Not a good picture but you can get an idea :)

Sounds like your guess is as good as mine... used as a map in the office, or perhaps train stations, to show where all the SP routes were. Very nice, I love vintage US maps! Love yours!
