The doll was given to me as a gift while traveling in Japan in 1975. Due to the language barrier, I know nothing about the representation. She came in a glass case, and she's 21 inches tall. I would like to provide my children with her history if possible.

The doll represents a character named Yaegaki Hime. It's part of a Romeo and Juliet type of story with a happier ending though.

Paste the link and you will find out the story behind the princess who can summon fox spirits.
I myself, have 4 variants of this doll.....

Thank you for the background of the character. I will share this with my grown children as it gives new meaning to the doll. I'm sure my Japanese family tried to explain this to me in 1975. Very thankful for the Internet and people like you to fill in the pieces!
