Another pricey little piece of porcelain at a rock bottom price, thanks to our local "Salvation Army" thrift store. A wonderful Dalmatian dog reclining and gazing upward. This 7 1/2" long 3 1/2 ' high figure is made by Wein Keramos of Austria. It is well marked, if not overly so.
There is the Wein shield mark that reads Wein Keramos made in Austria. The number 2834 is obscured by the Wein stamp on top of it, and the letter "C" which could stand for the designer. In this case it is probably Austrian sculptor Rudolf Chocholka (1888 - 1958). Wein Keramos was known for the artists signing or initialing many of their pieces. The date could be anywhere between c.1920 - 1950 .
The few pieces I looked up online have conflicting dates. So until I research more we'll leave it at that. I couldn't find the Dalmatian but I saw a German Shepard and Poodle the prices vary between $ 75 - $100 and even higher for earlier pieces. -Mike-
I see you are from northern Ohio. I am in southeast ohio. No wonder you are showing pottery:)
Yes we do live right in the thick of it...lol. I live around the Cleveland area so that's about as far east as I go. Sandusky is about as far west as I go. Haven't been to much of southern Ohio except for the once a year trip to Amish country. :)
I am about 45 minutes from Zanesville on a slow day. So much pottery to rescue:)
I still haven't found any really good art pottery up here with the big names. At least not in the thrift stores. They're getting too clever now a days. My poor vase with the 2 handles I have on CW is the closest thing I've found and I still don't know what that is. I've had it on several sites and no answers. Maybe Ervin would know. Thanks for his link too. I did send him an email and pics of the "Zinnia" vase. I'll see what he comes up with and them maybe ask him about the other one. -Mike-
