I have no idea what this is. I can't even remember how I came to own this but would be interested in knowing what it is. It folds up.

This is used to hold a large book, typically an over sized Dictionary, Bible or Atlas. Back in the day, people might have area in the home were all the books were kept, like a den or living room. There would be a reading table with lamp, and often a stand like this to hold open the large book for easy reference.
The carved decoration is Mexican, based on Mayan or Aztec designs.

Yes it does, thank you. I have been searching through internet photos and the carvings are identical to those on Honduran souvenir folk art. I know it's at least 50 years old. I knew it was meant for tourists but had no idea where it originated or what it really was.
