I bought these the other day and i don't know what i'm going to do w/ them yet. They are extremely heavy because the inner glass part is something like an inch thick. Each one weighs about 15 lbs or so. i think they look really cool, but i have no idea what to do w/ them. Alien eyes for an art car maybe? Looking for ideas.... All ideas welcome!
thanks eye4beauty and bellin68!
I want to Love these again!!!
you crack me up gargoylecollector!!
Mystery Solved! These are vintage Explosion Proof Lights. However, they are missing half their hardware (the top half). Made by Benjamin Electric back in the 30's/40's. See my Show & Tell for what the top half looks like. btw, the 'crenellated' notches are for screwing and unscrewing the head hardware. Very cool lights....
thanks AZVintageLighting. i wonder if these can be used somehow. if i can find something w/ the same thread/size as these two, i could rig something up pretty cool. the glass is 1/2" thick - making these lamps VERY heavy.
Well, you wont find anything currently made that has the same thread size. I've gone down that search and found the thread is unique to the fixture and not a standard NPT size. So, unfortunately they are only just parts.
I have, though, about 7 complete fixtures of these.. And could use the parts (shade and globe). Funny thing, its the head hardware (missing from yours) that is impossible find by itself. And you think its heavy now! the head hardware is massive and would add maybe another 15-20 lbs!
Please, please don't turn them into art... These big bad boys deserve to be restored back to the coolest explosion proof lighting on the planet....
Actually, check out the gray steel Benjamin explosion proof with the cage I posted a few months ago - That is what the head of yours looks like fully assembled.
