Another absolute beauty from my grandma. Her parents were from Scotland, and so it this brooch. I forget the name of the stones, but they are beautiful as well. Love this, looks like there was a varnish over the top which faded and caused this blackening. To polish or not to polish. I would say no for now. Lets see...

Fantastic heirloom...you are very blessed!!!
valentino97, I say Topaz....it is a great piece!!!
I love Victorian (queen Victorian loved Scottich (peppble) juwelry tha's why it becomes so popular and stayed also after she died)scottish jewelry. The ctrin was ofte used and also all the pepples stone were found , carved und used for jewelry since that time!
I would just get rid of the dry silver polish with an old soft tooth brush. Are silver cloths available in the US? Goddards have a great cloth. I use a cloth on my silver every six months or so. No abrasive polishes ever. Perhaps others can give an opinion on the cleaning debate. I've heard that tarnish should not be just left for extended periods of time.
Lovely piece. I found one a while ago similar to yours but I didn't pay attention that mine was only silver plate. But I did some research on line and found out about the meaning of those pins. Very interesting. Try to research "mizpah." :)
You would be forgiven for thinking that its topaz or citrine, but its called cairngorm. Its a type of rock-quartz with ferric oxide found in the Cairngorm Mountains, its common to older Scottish jewelry. I think the supply has been exhausted, so its considered rare. People ALWAYS think its citrine or topaz.
yeah stillwater you are correct, my grandmother told me this when she gave it to me. Caringorm is it!!!!
I wonder if I should have this professionally refinished. I believe there is a varnish over the top....do you argree stillwater? vetraio?
