This is one of my favored items. Truly beautiful craftsmanship in this Rockford Hill packet watch.
I am still in a process of finding more information about it.

So, there is the inside. I know by the number that it is one of the early watches. No wonder they had just made a few at the time.

What you have there is a very nice "box hinged" hunter case Rockford pocket watch! It looks to be a size 18... Open the back up and let us see the movement! That'll tell the real story. Also, any markings on the inside of the case would be helpful... The serial number on the movement will give you the date it was made etc....

I had added the pic of the inside of the watch. Thanks for your comment.

Here are a couple of links to a data base on your watch.

      Manufacture date around 1883.

Sorry, 1st link did not show with your correct serial number. Type it in the box & left click and it will show.

Well, the info out there for this watch is confusing. It's what's called a "transitional" model having both key wind and stem wind features. Some sites have it listed as a model 3 but that would be wrong because only the model 2 was transitional. Model 3 was offered only in stem wind and that was the only differance between it and the model 2 that I'm aware of... Also, no site claimed to know this specific watches jewel count. It looks to me to have 11 jewels. They were even unsure of it's year of manufacture equally divided between 1882 and 1883. In short, I don't think this watch is very well know to the collecting world. Post it on the NAWCC website. I'd sure they'd love to see it! Here's a link to their message board: http://mb.nawcc.org/

And another link for some Rockford info:

      Hello, toolate2.
I do appreciate all the information you had given to me. I had found a website that was giving the age of the watch by the serial number and the approximate age. That was the approximate age. They also said that, at that time, Rockford was making only 10 watches a month. I found the picture of similar pocket watch and it was 17 jewels. This watch has mark of J8 on the face cover and 14k on the back with HB Warrentel or Warranted and number 94J8 or 9418?
Thank you for your research. I will post it on NAWCC.
I do not have a key for this watch.
      Bea
