I bought this reel recently at an auction for just a few bucks. It's hard to believe how smooth it is after all these years. The clicker and drag button still both works also. The only marks on this reel is the number 40 on the bottom of the foot, 40 yards of line the spool will hold. Robert Miller told me he didn't think this was a Pflueger reel because of the foot style. Can anyone give me some ideas? Thanks and happy fishing, Dave

I have two of these reels in my collection, one is marked Climax on the gear side. I always considered them as Hardware Store reels, hence the difficulity in tracking down a manufacture.

Hello YardSaleDave, I'm no expert by any means but check this link out about your Climax reel, http://www.oldreels.com/generic.htm. Looks to me your Climax was manufactured by Montague. Also, click of the manufactures link to the left then look for Montague Reel Co. on the list. I also have one marked AJAX (pictured on this site), this site tells me it was manufactured by Pflueger. The tips of the foot on the Pflueger are curled up and this reel in question, the tips are not. Being there is no generic name on the reel it could be difficult to identify. Anyway, hope this helps you with your Climax reel.

Thanks Dave, you think yours may be a Montague also? Looks very much like my Climax.

Mine could be a Montague but without a generic name on it I don't know. Did you look at the link I sent you? I forgot to ask you, are the tips of the foot curled up or is it flat? I'm guessing flat. I found the site searching "Climax high pillar". Enjoy your reels and happy fishing!

I did check out the site, lots of info there, I bookmarked it for future reference. I think the telling aspects of your reel and both of mine is the coin edge tooling around the perimeter of the right and left plates.

You may have something there with the coin edge tooling. I just checked my Pflueger, it has the same tooling but it's inside the perimeter a little deeper, say one quarter inch from the edge on the front plate and maybe an eighth on the other. Will continue researching and let you know what I find, if anything.

Looking at the foot I'd say its a later version of the Hendryx made by Winchester, or H-I (Horrocks-Ibbotson) after they bought the fishing tackle divison of Winchester in 1932. The yardage mark was underlined by both companies.

Thanks for your impute Ken. I've done a lot of looking and reading, looking for anything about this reel. I can't seem to find a high pillar reel with the same foot as this one. You mention the yardage mark was underlined by both companies, the 40 isn't underlined on this reel. I'll sit back and wonder about this for awhile.

Hi Pat, I'll give ya $5 for it and that includes shipping. Just kidding. No, I really don't have a clue what the reel would be worth. See if you can find one like it on eBay and go from there.

If the clicker is nice and strong and the drag works well I'd place the value from $15.00 to 25.00 as to what you might expect get on ebay; yard sale price about half as much.

      Dave:
I have the identical reel, except mine has the name Chief in script on the handle face. It also has the numeral 40 on the bottom of the foot. I believe it is nickel plated because it polished up nicely despite salt water use. Its so small (1-3/8" across outside of end plates, & 1-5/8" end plate diameter) that I believe it was meant for children.
