This is one of the most incredible pieces of art we own. We had it looked at and true to form its from the Era of Sir Isaac Newton and we believe he commissioned this master painter Godfrey Kneller to do a portrait. This beauty measures 2.5 feet x 2 feet wide. The frame is all hand carved and is original to Era and painting. I have not idea who Godfrey Kneller is and my mother would like to know who to contact to see if they might be interested in helping to find out. She is moving and would like an opinion....help!!!

toracat, all I own is the jewelry I post...this paining belongs to my family! My father bought it at auction many moons ago about 30 years ago. I am far from being wealthy! I am a mere collector. YIKES!

Wonderful ! This is something you always see on "Antiques Roadshow" that ends up being worth a fortune.

I would say The National Gallery in London would be a great starting place. They may request better photos: information@ng-london.org.uk This is a national treasure if authenticated, something that perhaps would be better loaned to a museum (great tax incentive to do so) you would still own it, but the care and protection of it is better there than at home (statistically speaking) and the public gets to enjoy it too.

      Thank you for sharing,

Great piece! Painting is wonderful, but I am particularly drawn to the ornate frame. I wouldn't put it on the moving van.

In Harborguy's link, there is a reference to a painting by this artist done in 1702. No picture though. Wow, that's a great piece!!!!

Forgot to mention, the reference was to a painting of Sir Issac Newton.

here's a self-portrait of Kneller where his hair is almost identical as the hair in your painting.

ho2cultcha, OMG that's funny!!! Well they say all artists put a little or a lot of themselves in their paintings!!!
