Hello, I bought this today at thrift store, It was tarnished, but now looks good. It weighs 2.6 lbs. and is 6 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches long. The only marking is J 90 and 3000, If anyone knows this hallmark, please let me know! I looked for a long time and can not find any information. It has the feel and look of sterling. Even has a sterling smell! Thanks for looking! Don
I think it's probably silver plate.. I know that some European countries would mark their electro-plated marks this way. The two digit mark would indicate the number of pieces in the bath at one time, varying from 40 - 90, the less amount of items generally meant a thicker plating. I believe, if I remember correctly, Holland and Norway used this system. Someone in the Sterling section would probably know more than me.
Well I got the numbers slightly wrong, but here a link explains it

Thank you Maryh1956! I thought it may be sterling, but because usually on plate you can see usage or wear someplace on it, this was so thick I tested it and it came out drk red on test or over 90%. but I believe it is plate, but it is quite excellent condition, would like to know what the j and 3000 is? and probably German!
I looked for silver plate makers under J but couldn't find anything. 3000 may be a model number. The Norwegians are prone to have minimal marks on their plated pieces, don't know about the Germans though
It is a lovely piece. What is the inside like? Maybe it was kept in display cabinet and only used on special occasions.
Hi Very shiny and looks like it was never used! thanks! Don
