Is anyone familiar with the relief designs on these antique brass bookends?

This is another item I'm trying to help my mother-in-law identify as she's going through boxes of old family antiques and heirlooms. It's a very heavy pair of brass bookends, and we're trying to determine what era, timeframe, geographic reference, or scene is depicted in the relief design shown in the photo. Does anyone have any ideas?
