Got this huge apothecary jar at "GW' yesterday. It was yellow stickered so it was 50% off for that day. I'd seen it before but I didn't want to pay that much. It had some odd white scuffs on the outside that I thought were paint. It's 15" tall and 10" wide, not broken or chipped and quite "light" for it's size. I brought it home and figured I'd rinse it out carefully. As soon as the water hit the inside tiny bits of the "gold", really silver began to flake off ! No harm done there's enough of it so I carefully patted it dry. Not too much of a disaster. As for the outside I looked at the scuffs and was gently trying to remove them. Hmm.their coming off... but so is the finish !! The outside is an amber tinted lacquer ! The white marks were scuffed lacquer. So the whole piece is painted ! Silvered inside and amber lacquer outside to make the silver look gold. Basically all you can do is wipe this piece with a damp sponge. Never would have though this was so fragile. Still despite all the near disasters it still looks incredible. -Mike-
