I found this item I am thinking its a vase. I am going crazy trying to find any information on this. The outside of the glass is like a matte finish and feels more like pottery than glass, and the inside is smooth. It seems old but it may just be dirty. Light comes thru the bottom but not on the sides. There are no maker marks. two seams are visible going down the sides and the handles but not on the lip and bottom. Anyone who can tell me anything would be a blessing! I think its very nice and found it at goodwill.

looks like pewter on the pictures and on the picture from the top i see a line wich indicates it is press glass pressed into a mold it looks pretty unusual, thanks for posting!!

I also noticed that the mold seam is not perfectly lined up, the top part with the handles are off just a bit from the body. The black outside seems to be a very hard coating and light comes thru in small dings. Its not a soft coating like the old red and purple glass coloring that can scratch with a finger nail. This coating is like fused to the glass and the places where light comes thru the glass itself is scuffed. Thanks for any help.

If the mould lines don't match, that means it was made in two pieces. Is that like a pewter or silvering?... I can't tell what the coating is made of. Is it metallic?Very, very strange. Probably a good piece too. Definitely Deco, 1920's-30's.

Someone tell us what this is! I'm dying to know
    5. nat97305, 12 years ago
Me too! I have noticed a few more things, the matte finish feels a bit waxy when wet. on the places where it is scuffed on the edge of the spirals it looks grainy like pottery glaze when I use a jewelers loop on it. I have seen pictures of jet Czech glass beads that have the same dull black finish. At least I am not the only one dying to know! lol

spray painted on color to a clear molded glass. (or some variation thereof.) Not hyalith glass. (the black matte glass from czech)
I've seen these on and off thru the years. I think it's American. I've always been of the impression they're mid century (even with the deco sensibilities) but I don't know. They generally don't sell for much. I think Red is the color you normally see these in. Sorry, I don't have more news or better news.

I think I have seen a name for these before but I can't remember.. Someone out there knows it I am sure.

I agree with artislove. Is it possibly a metallurugical coating? Does a magnet stick to it?
    9. Stillwater Stillwater, 12 years ago
Pewter's not magnetic, and its so thin that it wouldn't attract a magnet anyway. Its hard to tell what it is from the photos, looks different in each one
    10. nat97305, 12 years ago
No its not magnetic, it only feels odd when I wash it, kind of waxy when wet. otherwise it like other glass. A UV light didn't show anything odd.

Stillwater, my agreement was intended for your is it metallic comment, not necessarily the pewter part. Sorry for not being clearer on that.

Here is some information on a coating that it sounds like to me. I could be wrong though? Just a suggestion.
